RLSS NWSMP Level 1

Who is it for?

The National Water Safety Management Programme Level 1 is suitable for environments where staff are working near the water but do not plan to enter that water. This could include teachers running field trips and walks on coastal or riverside paths, construction staff on sites close to water bodies or path maintenance teams working on coastal or canal footpaths

It is also suitable for staff who may be exposed to waterborne emergencies such as park rangers who work in spaces with water bodies but do not have a specific expectation to provide direct water supervision.

Course Delivery

The Level 1 Award consists of 2 parts, Pre-course self-study (2 hours) and a practical session with a trainer (4 hours).

The pre-course learning includes a multiple-choice question paper that is to be completed and sent before the beginning of the practical session. Learning is completed using an E pack which will be emailed to candidates up to 2 weeks before the course (subject to booking notice)

The practical session is delivered as a completely dry session. It is a combination of classroom-based theory and practical tasks set by the trainer both in the classroom and outside in the waterside environment

Course Learning Outcomes

  • Identify a range of open water hazards
  • Understand the effects of cold water immersion on the body
  • Demonstrate a minimum level of water safety and personal safety awareness
  • Show an understanding of legal requirements and duty of care applicable to group leaders
  • Understand principles of water safety, group management and risk assessment
  • Show an understanding of the principles of rescue and rescuer safety
  • Understand how to manage a group safely around the water margins
  • Understand key water safety issues
  • Apply practical risk management skills and show confidence in applying appropriate controls
  • Demonstrate competence in land-based ‘Emergency Response’ rescues

Additional Options

  • In addition to the core syllabus of the NWSMP Level 1 an optional module of in-water skills can also be delivered, venue dependant. This module allows candidates to experience what rescuing someone from water feels like in a live situation. This increases the value of the training in fully preparing candidates for an emergency
  • If you do not have a suitable venue for this course then a suitable local venue can be arranged

Booking Information

  • Course ratio: Minimum 2 candidates, Maximum 24
  • Course venue: Delivered at your premises or a suitable local venue (ideally with access to a water body but not essential for Level 1)
  • Course Duration: 2 hours of pre-study and 4 hours classroom-based
  • Course cost: dependant on numbers and venue.
